Mr. McKenzie tried his first murder trial in 1997.

His successful use of the “battered woman syndrome” drew praise and accolades from his colleagues. The case resulted in Mr. McKenzie being awarded the 1997 Clarence Darrow Award by the Oklahoma Criminal Defense Lawyers Association by being the very best criminal trial lawyer in Oklahoma. Since that time, Mr. McKenzie has obtained 6 acquittals in murder in the first degree cases, more than 10 cases where his client was convicted of a lesser offense than murder in the first degree, and has obtained dismissals in approximately 5 more murder cases.
